Washington, D.C. – The recent detention and deportation of refugee mothers and their children from Central America has drawn condemnation by 145 Democrats against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and President Barack H. Obama. U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) released a letter signed by 145 Democrats condemning the recent actions by DHS/Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for their 2016 national operation to detain refugees including mothers and their children from Central America and deporting them.
“The DHS operation generated widespread fear and panic in immigrant communities…85% of Central American families in detention have established threshold eligibility for refugee protection…A final administrative order does not necessarily mean that this mothers and children do not have legitimate claims for refugee protection,” according to the 145 Democrats who signed the letter to DHS and Obama.
The Democrats called for an immediate halt to detentions and deportation proceedings of Central American mothers and their children.
ICE detentions were reported in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Florida, N. Carolina, Georgia and other states. Nearly 200 including children were detained for deportation. ICE only confirmed it had detained 121 including children.
On some cases, ICE agents illegally broke into homes and detained undocumented immigrants without warrants and in other cases reported, they made false claims that they were looking for Afro-American suspects to gain entry into homes to search, but detained family members inside suspected of being in the country illegally.
A lack of accountability against ICE agents accused of home invasions and illegally detaining immigrants continue without prosecution by feds.
